Congratulations to Michael and Summer on their engagement! As a photographer, I had the pleasure of capturing their special moment on camera during their road trip stopover in Bend, Oregon.
Michael contacted me beforehand, letting me know he wanted to surprise his girlfriend with a proposal (and engagement photo session). He trusted me completely to choose the location, and I decided on Bend’s spectacular Dillon Falls. It’s a breathtaking spot, where the Deschutes River rapids tumble amongst volcanic rock formations. The Autumn foliage was at its colorful peak, the vibrant reds and golds creating a perfect backdrop for the special occasion.
I had to be extremely detailed communicating with Michael about how exactly to find the spot I’d chosen, as he had never visited Bend before (much less a random spot in the National Forest). I sent many text messages and videos describing specific trees and rocks…
I arrived ahead of the soon-to-be-engaged couple, and assumed (hopefully) the unassuming role of landscape photographer. When Michael dropped to one knee, that was my cue to commence with furiously snapping photos to capture the emotions of this once-in-a-lifetime moment. It was beautiful, and so joyous.
The day behaved flawlessly, the lighting perfect as the sun set behind the Cascade Mountains, Mount Bachelor visible in the distance. After the proposal (she said YES!), we explored the landscape. We walked from the cliffs overlooking the rapids (where the question was popped) through the pine trees and along the river. We searched for “cheesy” photo opportunities, as the couple had requested. Obviously, this was a fun couple to photograph!
Michael and Summer are a great couple, easy-going and comfortable to be around. It was amazing working with them, and I felt honored to be a part of their special moment (from behind the lens, of course!). Capturing the love and joy between these two wasn’t difficult at all…it was omnipresent!
If you’re considering an adventure engagement photo session, the beautiful landscapes of Central Oregon deserve serious consideration as the setting. From the snow-capped mountains to the rushing rivers, there are so many stunning locations to choose from.
As you plan your engagement photo shoot, it’s important to work with a photographer you trust and feel comfortable with. Whether you want to keep it simple, or go for a more adventurous vibe, communication is key. You’ll need to feel free to express ideas, preferences, concerns…so feeling relaxed and confident with your photographer is important so that everyone shares the same vision.
Michael and Summer’s engagement shoot was a memorable and heartwarming experience. The location, the couple, and the moment all came together to create something truly special. If you’re planning your own engagement photo shoot, take inspiration from Michael and Summer’s love story, and create something that’s uniquely yours.
