Smith Rock is one of the most stunning, most surprising places in Oregon. Most folks don’t picture a desert landscape when they think of Oregon, but the state is, in fact, mostly desert.

Smith Rock State Park is in Central Oregon, about 40 minutes from Bend, OR, a popular tourist destination year round.

Jo + Eric had their actual wedding at Black Butte Ranch, but opted not to have a photographer on that day. Instead, they wanted to capture a day that more closely represented them.

Sunrise on Misery Ridge

When you see Smith Rock State Park for the first time, the sheer cliff faces stand out among the scenery… upon closer inspection, you might notice teeny tiny humans up on that large, main ridge.

Smith Rock is the birthplace of sport climbing, so it is not out of the norm to see people who have climbed up to the top… but, you can walk up there too, if you are willing to brave a trail named “Misery Ridge.”

It is steep. It is a steep and difficult trail. But it is worth every heavy breath on the way up.

I met up with Jo & Eric in the dark. Our goal was to get up to the ridge before the sunrise, but the extreme cold did slow us down a little. When we got out onto the trail, the temperature was 12 degrees F. Brrrr.

But no matter. By the time you’re up on the face of the rocks, the view of the sunrise is great from anywhere.

Jo & Eric decided to start in warm clothes and change into their wedding attire at the top of the ridge. It was rather brave of them to wear it at all, because their dress and suit were chosen with summer in mind. Although the elopement date was in October, the extreme cold was a bit of a freak weather event. October can be kind of a gamble in Central Oregon, but generally, the weather is pretty good…

I made a huge, old school Stanley thermos full of piping hot coffee for us to enjoy at the top of the rock… it did not keep the coffee hot… it was simply too cold outside.

After exploring around the top of the rocks a bit, we headed down, back to the cars to warm up. It had warmed up to about 22 degrees which, honestly, felt warm compared to the temps we started in.

Jo & Eric opted for a simple vow exchange at one the most accessible, most scenic spots in the park. With sweeping views of the river, the canyon, and the cliffs, this spot is mere feet away from the park facilities and the parking lot. A great option for folks who may have mobility concerns.
