Smith Rock Elopements are my bread and butter. It is one of the most dramatic landscapes in all of Oregon. Epic towers of rock cast shadows across the Crooked River as eagles circle overhead.
It is one of the most visited parks in Oregon, attracting hikers and climbers from all over. Located in Terrebonne, OR, and only about 30 minutes from my front door in Bend, I am so grateful to live so close to such an amazing place.
Why choose to elope at Smith Rock State Park?
Many many reasons spring to mind, but here are the main ones:
- It has epic scenery… feels like maybe this doesn’t need mentioning, but it is the MAIN reason that people choose a Smith Rock elopement
- It can be extremely accessible– with sweeping views and paved paths close to the parking lot, a person with mobility considerations could possibly attend a ceremony at Smith Rock
- It can be extremely adventurous– Smith Rock is the birthplace of modern sport climbing in the US. You can have a climbing elopement if you want! But there are also a number of trails that you could hike if rock climbing isn’t your thing.
- It’s close to some fun towns to visit; Bend, Redmond, Terrebonne & Sisters. There’s plenty of great accommodation options.

Trails & Elopement Ceremony Spots in Smith Rock
There are a number of great trails to choose for an adventure elopement at Smith Rock. I have a more exhaustive list on my comprehensive blog post on how to elope at Smith Rock.
Misery Ridge – Perhaps the most famous trail in the park… maybe because of the name. This trail will get you up to the top of those epic cliffs.
River Trail – A less intense hike than the above trail, but no less scenic. In fact, I think I prefer the vantage point from the river for admiring the cliffs. There’s a stretch along this trail with views of beautiful green and pick rock.
Wolf Tree Trail – Take a right at the end of the bridge, and mosey towards a much less busy section of the park. The Wolf Tree for which the trail is named is a big, old ponderosa pine that might be a nice place to exchange vows in the shade on a hot day.
Rim Trail – A meandering path that stays high above the canyon. Good views, but less sweat.

Elopement Permit Info for Smith Rock
Eloping in State Park is pretty simple. Unless you have a big group size (over 20) and as long as you’re not setting up chairs or anything, you don’t need a special permit to elope at Smith Rock. There is a small amphitheater that can be reserved if you plan on having guests that need to sit down, or a long ceremony.

Best Time of Year to Elope at Smith Rock
Shoulder seasons are the glory times for Smith Rock. It is a state park in the high desert of Oregon, so the summer is HOT and bright.
I love Spring, especially in early April because that’s when the yellow bells are blooming. But the weather can be volatile. Central Oregon’s springtime is more like a jagged seam between winter and summer, not a smooth transition.
NOTE ON TIMING – Golden hour in Smith Rock is where it’s at. Sunrise is nice, with fewer people, but sunset is the best. When the sun rises, the cliff faces glow in a luminous pink light that can be a bit intense for the camera. Beautiful to experience, but the lighting is tricky for photos. If you are on the north side of the park, there’s nice back lighting and streams through the cliffs. The main part of the park is glorious during sunset, but you’ll likely not be the only folks getting your photos taken.

I believe that my background in ecology and outdoor education gives me a unique take on photographing elopements.
