Lizzie + Duke – A foggy summer Mount Rainier elopement

Mount Rainier rises like a dream above the forests of Washington—towering, glaciated, and commanding the horizon even from miles away. At 14,410 feet, it’s the tallest mountain in the state and the heart of Mount Rainier National Park, a place defined by contrasts: roaring waterfalls and silent alpine meadows, ancient cedar groves and jagged volcanic rock, lush river valleys and sweeping ridgelines. The park is massive and diverse, offering endless ways to explore—whether you’re looking for a short walk to a viewpoint or a multi-day backcountry adventure. It’s a place that invites awe and reflection, making it an unforgettable setting for elopements and intimate celebrations of all kinds.

Eloping at Mount Rainier: A Love Story at Mowich Lake

Mount Rainier National Park is one of those rare places that feels truly sacred—wild, expansive, and alive with alpine magic. Of all the corners of the park, Mowich Lake holds a special kind of stillness. Tucked into the northwest side of the mountain, it’s the park’s largest lake and one of its most peaceful. With rugged peaks reflecting off glassy water, trails that lead to panoramic overlooks, and wildflower meadows buzzing with life in the summer months, it’s a perfect backdrop for couples who want to celebrate their love in the quiet beauty of the mountains.

Disclaimer: Personal Story!! This place is incredibly close to my heart. In 2015, I thru-hiked the Wonderland Trail, a 93-mile loop that circumnavigates Mount Rainier—and it changed me. I walked through every ecosystem this mountain has to offer: from ancient forests to alpine ridges, across glaciers, and through huckleberry thickets so thick I had to stop every few feet to snack. I saw bears grazing in open meadows, watched mountain goats scale impossible cliffs, and woke to sunrises that lit the glaciers in pink and gold. That trail carved out a deep love for Rainier that’s never left me, and sharing it with couples is one of the greatest joys of this work.

Mowich Lake, in particular, feels like a hidden gem—a little off the beaten path, but all the more special for it. It is one of the more backcountry-feeling spots that you can drive to. But be prepared to drive a while on a bumpy dirt road.

Whether you’re saying your vows lakeside, hiking to a fire lookout for a golden hour ceremony, or simply soaking in the stillness together, Mowich offers a kind of intimacy that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Leaning into the moody day

Mount Rainier makes its own weather… it is nearly impossible to predict. August has historically been a pretty safe month to have clear skies, but there’s no way to know.

This giant peak is the most glaciated in the lower 48 states, and when warm, moist air blows into it, there’s clouds. Clouds and fog. And it is beautiful in its own way.

Higher elevation trails sometimes can take you up above the clouds, but it can be hard to predict. I chatted with the rangers last summer, and they mentioned a running joke they have– they each carry around a counter and tally up how many times folks ask them when the clouds will burn off.

But that’s what you get in the Pacific Northwest! When planning a PNW elopement, it is best to approach it with an open mind and adventurous spirit. Choosing locations that are varied, within driving distance of other features, and have character outside of The View is important when deciding an elopement location in Washington and Oregon.

Some people even choose the PNW to elope because of the moody vibes. Twilight vibes.

Vow Writing on the lakeshore

Lizzie and Duke started their elopement in casual clothes. This is something I often recommend to folks, especially if you’ve got a dress or suit that isn’t the easiest to move in. On top of comfort, it also creates variety in the photos, so you can look back on the entire story of the day.

The misty sky didn’t dampen these two’s spirits… their hair and clothes, perhaps… So fun, easy going and cheerful, we enjoyed some time playing and exploring at the lakeside before settling on this big, beautiful log to write their vows down.

Elopement Ceremony at Lake Mowich

After changing into their clothes at the car, and taking a few minutes to dry off and warm up by the heater, we embarked upon our hike around the lake.

This little peninsula, which would be an island if the lake was even a little higher, was the OBVIOUS choice for a vow exchange. I mean, it doesn’t get much more romantic.

As we made our way down to the water and around the lake, the fog started to lift a bit. It didn’t clear all the way, but it revealed the tops of some trees and the beautiful blue color of the water.

Post-ceremony Picnic + Exploring More of the Park

After their heartfelt ceremony, Lizzie and Duke tucked into a cozy lakeside picnic, complete with thermoses of tea and a favorite treat from a local bakery. There’s something so grounding about sharing a quiet meal after exchanging vows—no rush, no timeline, just the two of you soaking it all in. The fog rolled in and out, shifting the light every few minutes, and we took full advantage by wandering a bit farther down the trail to explore the varied shoreline and towering trees that hug the lake’s edge.

A Place to Return To

Eloping at Mount Rainier—especially somewhere as intimate as Mowich Lake—isn’t just about the wedding day. It’s about anchoring your story to a place that you can return to, again and again. Whether it’s to camp in the summer, snowshoe in the winter, or just drive out for a quiet walk in the woods, this landscape becomes a part of your love story. For Lizzie and Duke, and for so many others, that’s the true magic of eloping in a wild place like this—it’s not just a destination, it’s a lifelong memory woven into the land.
