A joyful, intimate elopement in the Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge feels like it was made for adventure elopements. With its jaw-dropping waterfalls, mossy trails, epic basalt cliffs, and sweeping river views, it’s the kind of place where nature shows off at every turn. Whether you’re hiking to a tucked-away waterfall or exchanging vows on a bluff overlooking the river, the Gorge delivers a magical mix of drama and intimacy.

And the best part? It’s wildly diverse. You can go from lush rainforest vibes on the western end to golden hills and wide-open views as you head east. It’s easily accessible from Portland but feels like a world away—making it one of the most iconic and flexible elopement locations in the Pacific Northwest.

Land Acknowledgement

The Columbia River Gorge is the ancestral land of many Indigenous peoples, including the Wasco, Wishram, and Chinook tribes, as well as the broader Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, the Yakama Nation, and the Nez Perce. For thousands of years, these tribes have called the Columbia River and its surrounding lands home, relying on its abundant resources and deep spiritual significance.

The Gorge has long been a place of gathering, trade, fishing, ceremony, and connection. Today, as we experience its beauty, it’s important to honor and acknowledge the original stewards of this landscape and recognize that this land has never been ceded. A portion of your presence here can be part of a deeper respect—by treading lightly, learning about the land’s Indigenous history, and supporting Native-led initiatives when possible.

An Adventure Elopement Story

Jaqui & Eva traveled from the Midwest to exchange their vows in Oregon. And what do most people think of when they think of Oregon and the greater PNW? Waterfalls. Jaqui & Eva are no exception, so I knew we had to incorporate at least one on their elopement day.

One of the advantages of choosing to elope in the Columbia River Gorge is that there are a plethora of towns to stay in. J & E chose a cute vacation rental in Vancouver, WA. We started the day there with some final touches and a first look. They then took a bit of time to sit outside and write their vows down in the beautiful yard.

After loading up the car and heading out, our first stop was a sort of secret spot in the Gorge near Cascade Locks. A peninsula with mossy groves and stunning rock formations, there are gorgeous clear views up and down the gorge.

J & E decided to say their vows here on this hot, gorgeous summer day. In August, the grass is golden and the winds are high. Very photogenic, but also quite flammable– and, in fact, there was a wildfire burning in the gorge, just over some of the mountains. We were treated to the site of a helicopter flying in and out to gather water from the river in order to fight the blaze. Kind of cool, if a bit sobering…

After our time in the warm sun, we drove to the dramatic Latourell Falls to cool down and explore a bit. One of my favorite falls in the gorge, you can really see the volcanic legacy of the region… Nature Nerd time! So the Columbia River Gorge is a cool landscape that has been shaped by cataclysm after cataclysm. Starting with layers and layers of basalt flow, and then enormous floods that careened across the PNW (probably dozens or hundreds of times). The floods carved huge swaths of land, leaving behind dramatic cliffs and waterfalls.

Latourell Falls has textbook, beautiful columnar basalt making up the main cliff where water plunges nearly 300 feet over the edge– exemplifying why it’s so fun to learn natural history and geology of the places you visit! We can see the history in the scenery!

The final event of the day was a celebratory dinner– not just any celebratory meal… a dinner cruise down the Willamette River. We asked the captain if he’d be a witness, and he happily obliged. J & E then got to steer the boat and honk the big horn.

Floating into the dock as the sun sank below the hills of Portland and the lights of the city blinked on was an amazing and picturesque way to end the beautiful elopement in the Columbia River Gorge.
