The Heceta Head Lighthouse is an incredibly scenic beach along the central Oregon Coast. This stretch of coast is frequently overlooked for elopement locations, largely overshadowed by Cannon Beach in the North and Brookings in the South.

This stretch of coast is characterized by some of the steepest parts of the Coastal Range. Deep forest green slopes plunge into the ocean. The shape of the coastline here is so intricate, with countless small coves, rocky reefs and tidepools, and panoramic capes.

Why Choose Heceta Head Lighthouse for an elopement?

As is the case for every location in this blog series, the number one reason to choose this spot for an elopement is this– it’s just so pretty. But here are a few more that spring to mind:

  • It’s relatively under utilized in the elopement world.
  • There’s a fun variety of scenery– a cool bridge, interesting rock formations, a lighthouse, a sweet little creek, and a pretty beach!
  • There’s a very adorable Bed & Breakfast that you can stay at. They also book elopements if you want to have a small ceremony with guests in their idyllic yard. In addition to the sweeping views, it is a really beautiful little house.
  • There’s spotty service, for a truly unplugged elopement experience.
  • You can hit up some nearby trails through the interesting coastal forests or rolling dunes (more info below).
  • It’s a great option for a small celebration, with the picnic area nestled back under the bridge by the creek.

Trails, Attractions & Elopement Ceremony Spots

Lighthouse Trail – The main attraction at this beach! It’s about a half mile from the parking lot up to the tower, for a mile long hike round trip.

Hobbit Trail –  The Hobbit Trail actually connects to the Lighthouse Trail if you want to make it a longer hike. There’s another trailhead a bit up the road as well. I love this trail. I love the wonky trees that make up the forest. The trail eventually opens up at Hobbit Beach. And as a lover of Tolkien, I am big into the name.

Lily Lake Loop & Baker Beach – A bit farther south on highway 101, the mountains retreat inland and the landscape opens into rolling sand dunes, coastal lakes and estuaries. Just as you start to descend from the cliffs, there’s Baker Beach– a long sprawling beach with several hiking routes that wind through the dunes and around Lily Lake.

Sea Lion Caves – The largest sea cave in the country. The access to the cave is on private property, but you can book tours or buy tickets to descend the staircase into the basalt. There you might see many different species of sea birds, California sea lions and Stellar sea lions.

As far as elopement ceremony spots at Heceta Head Lighthouse, I recommend a ceremony and vow exchange down on the beach, rather than at the actual lighthouse. Mainly because the rules are a little bit fuzzy– the Bed and Breakfast offers elopement packages, so it is respectful to reserve the land at the top of the hill up there for their guests to have ceremonies. The State beaches in Oregon largely have the same rules about gatherings and events; that being that elopements don’t need any special use permits. There are a few exceptions, but generally, if your event has less than 50 guests, you’re all good. So, again, I recommend the beach for the main event, then you can head up to the lighthouse for pictures.

Additionally, the Hobbit Trail or Baker Beach Trail could take you to a lovely, perhaps more private, place to hold an elopement ceremony.

Elopement Permit Info for Heceta Head Lighthouse

As stated above, elopement permits are a little wonky at the lighthouse. With little exception, all along the Oregon Coast, you can elope without a permit as long as your group size is small. Please read the above section for more info.

Best Time of Year

You can elope year round on the Oregon Coast, but different seasons offer different pros & cons. The only season I would not recommend is winter. It is accessible, and you can definitely do it, but it will almost certainly be raining.

Spring also offers a likely promise of rain, but less constant. And it offers the possibility of wildflowers! In March and early April, you get big blooms of skunk cabbage in meadows, creeks and seeps. The other flowers of the Oregon Coast emerge a little later in the spring. Late April and May are my favorite times for wildflowers on the coast.

Summer has pretty reliably good weather, but the later in summer, the sunnier it’ll be. If you want the moody vibes the people love the PNW for, but don’t want to get totally drenched, I recommend June. Summer is also the busiest time of year on the coast for tourism. You will be contending with crowds, but it is possible to find places and times with less people. Heceta Head Lighthouse has a smaller beach with less space to spread out than other Oregon beaches, but you can still find space. Alternatively, there are bigger beaches nearby with more space, like Hobbit Beach.

Fall is a spectacular time to elope on Oregon Coast. The weather is fantastic, and there are fewer crowds. I also like that the sun sets earlier in the day than the peak of summer (so we can have golden hour portraits, and all get to bed at a good time!). Depending on where you are, you can find some autumn leaf colors as well.

Oregon Elopement Photographer

Whether you decide to elope at the Heceta Head Lighthouse, other places on the Oregon Coast, or the greater PNW, I’d be honored to be considered as your elopement photographer.

I may be biased, but I believe my background in ecology, outdoor guiding and nature education gives me a unique take on planning and photographing adventure elopements. If you have any questions about my process or eloping in general, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m happy to answer any questions you have.
