Engagement, Oregon

Embracing a change in plans is sometimes the exact recipe for a perfect day.

I met Jennica and Tanner at one of those big bridal fairs– normally, I would think that I’d find any folks who want what I offer at one, but I got a pretty good deal on it… so why not?

They stopped to look at my booth and we started chatting. I asked them about their vision for their Big Day, and I will never forget the little look they shared. After glancing at one another, Tanner said, “Well… we’re nerds and we really like Lord of the Rings…”

Immediate excitement.

We chatted about all things classic fantasy, and especially about the Rings of Power series (this was shortly after it’s release).

Their vision for their wedding was more of a Hobbit or Dwarven party, though they themselves were planning on dressing as elves. But they we looking for more of a fantasy adventure vibe for their engagement photos. The inspiration was Lothlorien– big trees and ethereal feels.

Well, here in Oregon there are many places that fit that vibe, but one specific place jumps out to me– the McKenzie River corridor.

The McKenzie River is an epic choice for an adventure elopement or engagement.

The McKenzie River is one of Oregon’s Wild and Scenic Rivers. The National Wild and Scenic River System was instituted by Congress in order to preserve the unique ecological and cultural significance as a free flowing waterway. Oregon boasts the highest number of Wild and Scenic Rivers in the system.

The McKenzie is my favorite river in Oregon (so far). Recent volcanic activity (like… alarmingly recent in geologic time) has shaped the landscape, creating epicly beautiful pools and waterfalls. It is known for its beautiful blue color and clarity.

Some of the most iconic spots in Oregon are along the McKenzie River. Tamolich Falls, aka the Blue Pool, is one of Oregon’s most instagrammable spots. It is incredibly gorgeous, but… people definitely know about it… it’s quite crowded. If you are thinking about the Blue Pool for an adventure elopement in Oregon, take this into account during your planning process so you’re not terribly disappointed. I’ll also always recommend a shoulder season elopement for these reasons as well. After Labor Day, a lot… not all, but a lot… of the most popular spots in the PNW see way less traffic.

The only times I’ve ever been there and made the hike were very early in the morning. And, unfortunately, the day of jennica and Tanner’s engagement shoot was one of the most crowded days I have ever seen. Cars were lining the entire road and even part of the highway.

That might not be an issue for folks who are just there to hike, but walking the road adds an extra mile to the trail each way which is not ideal for a photoshoot with a limited-ish timeframe, nor is the throngs of people we’d certainly be dodging.

Luckily I had arrived hours early to scout the conditions of the trail, and so we had enough time and foresight to pivot.

Staying in the McKenzie River area, we landed on Sahalie Falls.

It could not have been a more perfect choice. The plunging falls are surrounded by mossy rocks and towering cedars, douglas firs and grand firs.

The turquoise waters are so clear, watching the bubbles churn as the water tumbles over rocks is mesmerizing… I have sat and watched for many many minutes…

Jennica and Tanner, keeping to their nerdy roots, decided to go Fantasy Lite with their outfit choices.

They started out in more casual outfits, and we walked down the trail towards Koosah Falls. The trail does loop around for a lovely 2.4 mile hike. I highly recommend the full hike if you’re ever in the area.

After a little bit of exploration, they changed into their formal outfits. Jennica the most elf-like dress she could find without it being overtly fantasy (velvet, big bell sleeves, embroidery, etc.). Tanner had on a tunic with more fantastic elements worked into the accessories. His shoes and arm thingies (I can’t remember what they’re called… ha).

The most exciting part of the day was climbing down the hill to get to the actual waterfall. You have to scramble carefully down a hill that is criss-crossed with fallen trees, branches, large steps, and mud. And this area basically never dries… with a typically wet climate and the constant spray from the powerful cascade.

The PNW has so much to offer, from high deserts to alpine lakes, from crystal clear rivers to expansive lava beds. I’d love to help you navigate the myriad of options that await you for your PNW elopement or engagement.

Before I started my business leading folks on adventure engagements and elopements in the PNW, I was leading folks through the wilderness as an outdoor educator and guide. I absolutely love connecting folks with nature on a deep level, and I am honored to continue that work in conjunction with people’s epic love stories.

From scouting locations and building a custom timeline to helping navigate permits and logistics, I’ve got your back every step of the way.
